Better Side of Fifty

The purpose of The Better Side of 50 is to provide fellowship and educational opportunities for all adult members of MDLC; seniors, near seniors or anyone having a desire to participate in group activities and increase his or her circle of friends in the church.

Fellowship is one of the necessary ingredients in making a Christian's life richer and fuller - this is the Better Side's charter. What could be better than an event accompanied by good food and a program with some entertaining or educational value? The group meets for an activity once each month. Usually, it involves a potluck lunch in the Fellowship Hall followed by a program, or a bus trip to a nearby educational or historical area of interest.

2005 events included:

  • A Soup and Cornbread luncheon with the Senior "Tappers" dance troop
  • Touring the Armond Bayou Nature Center, lunch in Kemah, and the M.S. Sam Houston boat tour of the Houston Ship Channel
  • Potluck and a thorough program explaining everything about Stem Cell Research
  • A tour of the Bush Library, lunch at J. Cody's BBQ and a tour of the A&M Horticulture Center
  • Potluck and an enlivening program with Dan Parsons, President of the area Better Business Bureau
  • Seeing the extensive exhibits about Gold and related IMAX at the Museum of Natural Science, and at the MFAH lunch and the captivating exhibit from the Baseball Hall of Fame
  • Potluck and the TXDOT Director of Enforcement for the Motor Vehicle Division
  • Our annual movie and ice cream social, this year remembering that we are "Forever Young"
  • A bus trip to the Brookwood Community, including a tour, lunch and shopping
  • Potluck and Connie O'Sullivan's engrossing history refresher, "Opening of the West"
  • Tours of the nearby Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary and St. Martin's Episcopal cathedral, and
  • The 19th annual All-Church Christmas Dinner Party at the WestLake Club.

If you are interested in great fellowship come join the Better Side! As one of the frequent attendees says to those who look for excuses not to attend, "Just Do It!" You have nothing to lose but the blues.
